How Wine Racks Can Accentuate Your Wine Collection

Those who enjoy the hobby of tasting and collecting wines are usually passionate about having an assortment of wonderful wines around them so they can enjoy them at any time. Also, wine lovers enjoy being able to share their special finds in wines and like to have some extra bottles available to be able to share at their next dinner party or to serve as dessert wines. One important aspect of keeping quality wines is making sure they are stored correctly and securely in wine racks.

A great wine rack allows the wine to be stored properly so that the bouquet of the blend is preserved. Unfortunately, as all winemakers know, wine can be rather fickle and changes can happen over time, especially if it is exposed to oxygen. Storing the bottles horizontally will assure that the wine is constantly in contact with the cork. This in turn keeps the cork moist and elastic and will keep it from drying out.

When a cork ends up becoming dry, it will shrivel up and become smaller. When that happens, the seal on the bottle breaks and oxygen is allowed to get into the bottle and this ultimately destroys the taste of the wine. It causes oxidation and will make a wonderful wine turn into a mouth full of vinegar which is not the way to impress the guests at the table. It is this factor that dictates that wine racks be constructed to allow the wine bottles to be stored horizontally, keeping the cork wet and plump.

In addition to being maintained in a horizontal position, wine should also be stored in a space that is both cool and dark. It is also best if the bottles are not exposed to strong odors or to ongoing vibrations. As with most things, keeping the wine cool helps to preserve the taste, but be sure that it doesn’t get too cold or is ever in danger of freezing. A cool, stable temperature is the best environment.

For many people, a basement is the perfect solution to keeping the wine in the best environment possible. Wine should be stored in darkness in order to eliminate the chance of chemical reactions that can be initiated by exposure to light.

However, because vibrations keep the wine from settling and properly maturing, you need to be sure that your wine rack is not placed near an area where machinery is often used. Avoid placing the wine rack in areas such as laundry rooms, mechanical rooms, garages, boilers rooms or any other place where vibrations can interfere with the wine being able to age slowly and fully. Also, avoid any room that is subject to strong odors, as the cork is absorbent and strong odors could end up affecting the taste as well.

There is a huge variety of wine racks that you can find on the market that will suit the tastes and the needs of any wine hobbyist. For those in tight spaces, small wine storage racks will hold up to six bottles of wine. There are also stackable wine rack units that can grow with the collection. For the larger collections, large storage cabinets or custom built in wine rack systems are also options.

What better way to enjoy the look of those expensive bottles of wine than to present them in wine racks? You do not have to pay an arm and a leg for the racks though. Some stores, especially retail stores, will charge extravagant prices for wine accessories. Stop handing them your hard earned money. There are online retail shops that can get you a much better price for the accessories you need. You will be shocked at the selection of accessories and products that these online shops have in stock.
